The most famous coral reefs in the world
There are lots of coral reefs in the world however a few of them are quite famous. The most famous ones tend to be the ones that attract the most scuba divers. In large part this is because the only time you will see a coral reef is when you are diving on one. Coral reefs are popular dive spots in large part because of the wide range of marine life that the support.
The most famous coral reef in the world, by far is the Great Barrier Reef. I know a couple of my friends went on honeymoon vacation to Australia, and they were most thrilled by these fantastic coral reefs. There is probably no other reef in the world that the average person knows by name. The reason for the fame of the Great Barrier Reef is its sheer size, it is more than three thousand kilometers in length. In reality it is not one long reef rather it is about three thousand smaller reefs that stretch for this distance. The Great Barrier Reef is well known for the huge number of different types of marine creatures that reside there.
Probably the second most famous coral reef in the world is the Belize Barrier Reef. This is not one of the larger reefs at just nine hundred kilometers but it does attract the most visitors. In fact this is the reason for its fame, the huge number of divers that make the trip. There are a couple of reasons for its popularity, one is that it is easily accessible, another is the huge range of marine life. However the real attraction is the Great Blue Hole, an underwater sink hole that is widely regarded as one of the best dive spots in the world.
The next most famous coral reef is the New Caledonia Barrier Reef. This is the second longest reef in the world however since it surrounds the sparsely populated islands of New Caledonia it doesn't receive nearly the visitors that the Great Barrier Reef does. One of the reasons that this reef is so famous is that it attracts sea life that can't be seen anywhere else. There are more than a thousand species around the reef that have not yet been classified. In addition it is one of the few places where the green turtle can be found.
The Andros Reef in the Bahamas is the next most famous coral reef. In large part the reason for this is that it is located near the popular tourist areas in the Bahamas which attracts a lot of divers. It also happens to be the world's third largest reef. However the real attraction for divers is the blue holes. Because the reef sites right on a trench that goes down for six thousand feet when you dive next to it you will see a big wall that seems to go forever. Although diving such blue holes can be very dangerous thousands of people show up every year to dive them.
